South Korea and Japan

Here are some pictures Kevin took when in Japan and South Korea for some conferences and meetings. He was over there about a week and a half. Unfortunately, Amy was not able to come. These photos were scanned in true color RGB at 125 dpi, color corrected for viewing on a monitor. They were JPEG encoded using [FIXME] compression ratios (over [FIXME]). The photos range from [FIXME] to [FIXME] in size.

Hawaii

Here are some photos we took when we went to Hawaii. Kevin had a conference there. Amy came along for an ersatz honeymoon (we also celebrated Amy's birthday there). These photos were scanned in true color RGB at 125 dpi, color corrected for viewing on a monitor. They were JPEG encoded using moderate compression ratios (over 10:1). The photos range from 15K to 60K in size.

Proof
Here is some photograph proof Kevin did his duties at the conference. Here he is manning his two posters.

Sunrise on Haleakala
This photo is for Professor Birdsall (Kevin's advisor). Like us, he awoke in the wee hours of the morning to drive up to the top of Haleakala to see the sunrise, but was rained on. We were a bit more fortunate.

On Top of Haleakala
Here is Kevin shortly after sunrise.

A Cow
There are cows in Hawaii and Amy insisted on photographing one on our way down Mount Haleakala.

The Valley of Gods
In the middle of the Island is a very nice valley we visited after going to the Maui Plantation. Like any good valley of the gods it comes complete with a phallic rock.

Touristy Photo
The Maui Ocean Center was a new facility on the island when we visited.

On the Beach
This photo is here to remind Kevin to take the image processing challenge and fix the lighting.

In the Water
Here is a picture of a school of fish taken while snorkeling. The camera does not really do justice to the colors seen in person.

Road to Hana
This is a photo of the part of the long narrow winding road to Hana. There are something like 49 waterfalls (or was it bridges) along the way.

Waterfall
Here is one of the aforementioned waterfalls on the road to Hana.

A Sacred Pool
Here is one of the Seven Sacred Pools.

Sunset at the hotel
Beautiful sunsets were seen most every night we were there from our hotel.

Our Wedding

Here is an assortment of photos from our wedding. These photos were scanned in true color RGB at 150dpi and color corrected for viewing on a monitor. They were JPEG encoded using low compression ratios (over 8:1). The pictures range from 87K to 133K in size.

The Ceremony

The Wedding Kiss
Here is the photograph of the wedding kiss. All the photos of the ceremony itself look basically like this one.

Just Married
The recessional.

The Reception

The Wedding Cake
Here is a photo of the wedding cake. We would include photos of the cutting and what not but they are not particularly good.

The Garter
Here is the traditional removal of the garter. We would include a photo of the bouquet toss, but, like the wedding cake cutting photos, none of the photos of the toss are particularly good.

The Toss
Here is an action shot. Brandon caught the garter (and did in fact end up being the next person to get married).

Yosemite

Here are some photos taken when Kevin hiked up half dome with his brother-in-law
Nathan. These photos were scanned in true color RGB at 125 dpi, color corrected for viewing on a monitor. They were JPEG encoded using moderate compression ratios (over 20:1). The photos are range from 22 to 35K in size.

A View from the Ground
This is how Half Dome looks from ground level (where the trail begins). It is about nine miles from the camp site to the top of half dome. The top of half dome is around four thousand feet from where this picture was taken. While Nathan and Kevin were hiking, Kevin's nieces (Julia and Victoria) played with their mother (Kathy) around Yosemite.

On the Trail
Here is a view of the face of Half Dome taken about mile before the fiendish stairs.

Lunch with a View
About midway up the fiendish stairs (approx 300 ft from the top of half dome), Nathan and Kevin had a somewhat precarious lunch.

The Fiendish Stairs
This photo was taken about midway up the fiendish stairs. The stairs were dubbed the fiendish stairs by Kevin and Nathan for several reasons. The stairs are quite steep, narrow (which causes problems when encountering hikers moving in the opposite direction), irregular and lack anything for your hands to grab. Furthermore, the descent down the roughly two hundred feet of stairs is quite rough on your knees.

The Cables
These are the cables for the final ascent to the top of half dome. It is roughly 200 ft near verticle from the base of the cables to the top of half dome. The cables are an interesting climb with people moving up and down on the same set of wires (forcing climbers to engage in acrobatics when they meet). For anyone who wishes to climb half dome, Kevin and Nathan both strongly recommend gloves and shoes with good traction (the path up half dome is surprisingly smooth ... Kevin remembers his feet sliding down the rock face several times while on the cables).

Final Ascent
Here is Kevin making the final ascent. Don't let the photograph fool you: this picture was shot aiming straight up when Kevin was about 25 ft up the cables.

Victory for Nathan
Nathan's victory. To get a sense of scale, you can compare the features on this photograph from the shots of the mountain taken from the ground.

Victory for Kevin
Kevin's victory.
